Topic: Courage

If we are really honest, every one of us needs continuing doses of courage in our life. Whether we like to admit it or not, we are bombarded daily with opportunities to be distracted from our faith, our families and our work. Time demands, pornography, stress on our jobs, families wanting our attention and energy, media skepticism about our beliefs, traveling for work, dealing with difficult co-workers... they all can distract us from what we are ultimately to be all about. Over the course of our conference, our leaders will take us to the Bible to find God's heart, hope and wisdom in dealing with these and other discouraging and difficult areas of life.

Our Leaders:Walt McCord, Assistant Professor, Moody Graduate School - Walt has a tremendous passion to help Guys live courageous livesCharlie Dyer, Provost and Dean of Education, Moody Bible Institute - Charlie has tremendous scholarship in the area of the Middle East and its relationship to end-times

No Title - Mars Hill Institute

♦ Mars Hill Institute

Mars Hill Institute at Crossroads is a 411 Deepen ministry focused on equipping people theologically, philosophically and practically so they can deepen their faith and interact with our culture in a biblical and relevant manner. It is our goal here at Crossroads Aspen to develop this ministry into a full-fledged local church based equipping center and center for cultural studies. Mars Hill Institute is an academic setting and will utilize a case study format to show how to use the information in real life situations.

Mars Hill Institute at Crossroads will be offered twice a year. It will be a time when the leadership and others in the church and community gather together for several evenings in September and then again in January to pursue loving God with our whole mind. It will be taught and led by the pastoral leadership of the church and various visiting speakers.

Origin of Mars Hill

The name Mars Hill comes from the Greek name; Areopagus meaning, "hill of Ares." Ares was the Greek god of thunder whose Roman equivalent was Mars. The Areopagus was located in Athens and near the Acropolis. It traditionally was where philosophers and theologians would gather together to talk over religious, moral and philosophical matters.

Acts 17 records Paul's visit to Athens and Mars Hill. From this account we learn that Paul was greatly distressed to observe that the city was full of idols. We also learn that he would reason with people in the local synagogue and even in the marketplace. On a certain occasion some Epicurean and Stoic philosophers engaged in conversation with him and brought him to a meeting of the Areopagus. It was here that Paul shared the good news of Jesus and the resurrection. Paul used his vast biblical training as a Rabbi as well as quoting several secular poets to engage these thinkers.

Our Vision

Our purpose for the Mars Hills Institute is to encourage people in their personal devotion to the Lord Jesus and to equip them to be able to engage the culture they live in with the unique good news of Christ as effectively as Paul engaged people in the marketplace, synagogue or institutional setting. It is not enough to just learn biblical information. We must be aware of the culture and its values around us and be able to bring the good news of Christ appropriately into our conversations and vocations. This will be accomplished by providing biblical education alongside cultural education and applying them in interactive case study format.

It is our desire that through the ministry of Mars Hill Institute we all will develop the character of the Bereans who are mentioned earlier in Acts 17.

"Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true."
